Thanks for the feedback. There's a certain milestone puzzle coming up on the site which I'm doing a special larger puzzle for, maybe I'll using it on this one...
I've been leafing through the Tapa Variation Contests and it looks like these have been done already. See TVC VIII, Puzzle 10, where this variation is called Tapa Quads. Though from that name it looks like they only had 2 by 2 large clues in mind, not general square large clues as in your instructions. And, come to think of it, why not have rectangular or arbitrarily-shaped large clues? Domino-sized large clues seem particularly promising to me.
Nice find, when searching myself, I came across this large square slitherlink by Bryce Herdt (https://www.gmpuzzles.com/blog/2016/08/slitherlink-large-square-by-bryce-herdt/) however nothing relating specifically to Tapa, though I did scour a few blogs.
I completely agree that squares seem a bit limiting but this was just an introductory puzzle. I plan to release puzzles in future with areas that aren't even quadrilateral.
This is a very pretty puzzle and a great idea for a variation! Have you tried it on larger grids?
